Open Question: Cheapest way to fly from California to The Netherlands?

I've been doing a lot of research but I still need help deciding what my best options would be. I'm looking to go for the whole month of July. What are the best airlines? and is it better to buy the tickets off a website like expedia, kayak, etc. or straight from the airlines (ie. americanairlines.com) I've never been to Europe so I'm quite new to this... ohh and also what are some important things I should consider? any tips?
